Get Your Horse Winter Ready!

Irish Sport Horse Magazine October 2020 #24

Hi All, we hope that you are keeping well! The theme of this Issue of Irish Sport Horse Magazine, is to Get Winter Ready! Yep, winter is well and truly on the way and this time we look at preparations to make sure that you and your horse are set and ready for the season ahead. Jordan Bastian talks preparation, particularly for those of you that are situated in the chillier parts of the world.

I discuss rugs, and what rug or type of rug will work best with the type of clip that you decide to give your horse. Plus we discuss what rugs are more appropriate if you are wintering your horse out, but still planning to work your horse.

We also share our Top 10 Must Have Items for your Stable Yard this Winter, and that hip flask with the aged single malt, just might be top of the list;-)

We hear from Equipeople who share how they will be helping the Equestrian Industry with new services; that will see keen European Students looking to gain work experience in many sectors of the Irish Equine Industry.

In our Horse Health and Care Section – I discuss the signs, symptoms and treatment for windgalls, and how to best avoid them with young horses.

For those of you who are always searching for the bit of adventure, Jordan has a super piece on the
Mongol Derby the world’s longest horse race! This is quite an adventure, across the wilds of Mongolia on the Native Mongolian Horses, some of which are quite Wild! The race recreates the ancient Postal System of Genghis Khan and each rider will have to partner at least 26 horses to complete the race. There are rigorous Vet Checks to ensure Animal Welfare, and there are also many helpers to keep an eye out for any riders who get into difficulty. This race is an amazing way to experience the culture and landscape of Mongolia from the back of a noble steed!

In our Breed Special Jordan takes a look a look at the Kerry Bog Pony, how the breed came into being. This small pony has been roaming the bogs of Kerry for many a year, but the breed was in danger of becoming extinct. However ,now the Kerry Bog Pony Society is working hard to preserve this wonderful Irish Pony, so that will be around for generations to come.
